Clinical Information

CD279 (cluster of differentiation 279 or programmed cell death 1: [PD-1]) is an immunoregulatory receptor highly expressed by follicular T helper cells. Its expression has also been shown in the neoplastic counterpart of this T-cell subset, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. This molecule interacts with programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1), also known as B7 homolog 1 (B7H1), expressed on follicular dendritic cells and other cell types, which serves to attenuate T-cell activation. In the appropriate histologic context, a background rich in CD279-positive T cells can support a diagnosis of nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin lymphoma.
