Clinical Information
Calcitonin is a hormone involved in calcium metabolism. Staining for calcitonin produces fine granular, cytoplasmic staining of C cells of thyroid, medullary thyroid carcinomas, many atypical laryngeal carcinoids, and other neuroendocrine tumors. Amyloid deposits within medullary thyroid carcinoma may also exhibit varying degrees of calcitonin immunoreactivity.
