Clinical Information

Alpha synuclein is a member of a family of cytoplasmic proteins found predominantly in the presynaptic nerve terminal of the brain. Synucleins are thought to be involved in neuronal plasticity, synaptic function, and neurodegenerative disease. Alpha-synuclein is abundant in Lewy bodies in sporadic Parkinson disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. It is a major component of amyloid plaques in Alzheimer disease.
